60th Anniversary Event - Guided Walk and Picnic at Earl's Hill
16 July 2022, 10:00 (Add to calendar)
About the event
The Friends of Earl's and Pontesford Hill group are guiding two walks for you to choose from, which meet at and leave from the reserve carpark SY5 0UH at 10am (grid ref: SJ409056; What3Words: tributes.polished.agreeing).
Walk 1: a circuit round the hill, 3km. The path is generally good but has some steep sections and rocky steps. This will be a chance to visit many of the varied habitats, learn about the species and talk about our conservation plans. Binoculars recommended.
Walk 2: a visit to the Lower Camp iron-age hillfort, and along the 'bulldozer track. 1km maximum, along an all-weather graded track. This walk will suit younger children and mixed ability visitors, including 'off-road' wheelchairs. There are trees to climb and dens to play in. We should be able to look at some coppiced areas and discuss habitat management. We might meet the Dexter cows who conserve the habitat by grazing.
Following the walk, Howard and Ann Thorne have kingly offered the gardens of Earlsdale House for a Bring Your Own Picnic area from 12.30pm
Car Parking: There is limited car parking at the hill so in the first instance we urge those who live nearby, and are able, to walk to the meeting point.
There will be additional parking at the field owned by Earlsdale House, of which the entrance is just before the reserve entrance and will be sign posted on the day. Please do park considerately. There will also be directions to the main carpark meeting point
